Hotel guest room energy control systems are currently available in which lighting and cooling loads are reduced in guest rooms during periods of vacancy. These systems are widely used throughout the world, but have limited application in the U.S. An increased market penetration of such systems could significantly reduce hotel energy use.

California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) is currently conducting a study of currently available hotel guest room energy controls and their energy savings potential. An initial scoping study of available technologies will be followed by a field study to collect performance data for selected control systems. Energy use in controlled and uncontrolled guest rooms will be monitored.
