CFL Downlights - Residential Kitchens

The CFL downlights for residential kitchens project developed and demonstrated low-cost, energy-efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) downlights designed specifically for residential applications. A similar product was developed for the commercial sector.

This technology complies with the 2005 California Title 24 energy Code that requires 50% of total kitchen lighting wattage to be high efficacy (fluorescent). Pacific Gas & Electric conducted a thermal performance evaluation of CFL downlights from this initial project.

To assess the performance of the Lithonia Lighting downlight system in new Sacramento homes, Sacramento Municipal Utility District sponsored a demonstration that included the installation and evaluation of 300 downlights in 50 homes. The builders believed the system to be easy to install while providing light levels higher than incandescent systems. SMUD has also included this product in their Advantage Home Program.

Product Description: The research team developed a master-remote CFL downlight system that is commercially available with the following features:

  • Master-slave ballast geometry with one ballast operating two fixtures
  • Fixture costs reduced by over 50%
  • Thermally enhanced ballast configuration
  • Plug-and-play wire connections
  • Institutionally transparent / builder friendly
  • High output lamps
