CFL Downlights - Commercial Applications

The main purpose of this project was to develop and demonstrate a low-cost, energy-efficient compact fluorescent (CFL) downlight designed for commercial applications.

Due to the success of the residential CFL downlight project, the project team decided to develop a version for the commercial sector that includes the same “master-remote” strategy of using one ballast in order to supply two fixtures.

This product is commercially available through Lithonia (model #CCR82). A commercial system was developed and commercialized by Lithonia Lighting as the CCR62 (or CCR82) which used a master-remote design. This product promises to cut installation cost by about 20% compared to standard downlight systems. The new system offers energy efficiency improvements as well.

Product Description: The research team developed a master-remote CFL downlight system that is commercially available with the following features:

  • 50 lumens per watt
  • Master-slave ballast geometry with one ballast operating two fixtures
  • Fixture costs reduced by over 50%
  • Thermally enhanced ballast configuration
  • Plug-and-play wire connections
  • Institutionally transparent / builder friendly
  • High output lamps

Application: Commercial building retrofit, renovation, or new construction in hallways, lobbies, conference/meeting rooms, etc.
