After partering with The Watt Stopper/Legrand in research and development of the WN-100 (Vanity Nightlight/Occupancy Sensor,) CLTC continued development and demonstrations of an energy saving vanity fixture with the same technologies. Field demonstrations were conducted in partnership with with SMUD in hotel and assisted living applications. A manufacturer, MetalOptics, was later identified to produce the system in high volumes at a competitive price. The "Smart" bathroom vanity fixture saves energy, lowers the occurance of false-offs, and with increased lamp life minimizes the cost of maintenance. By reducing average time the light is left on each day, the fixture is capable of substantial energy savings. The "Smart" fixture is equipped with controls that include an automatic sensor to de-energize the fluorescent portion, and illuminate the LED array nightlight. The occupancy sensor "auto-off, manual-on" mode maximizes energy savings. Research showed that 75 percent of bathroom lighting energy is consumed when lights are left on for more than 1 hour. By using longer time-out setpoints, most of the potential energy savings are achieved while the chances of generating false-offs are minimized. Maintenance costs are significantly reduced with the use of the "Smart" bathroom vanity fixture. Field tests at The Doubletree Hotel proved that reduced use of lighting energy extended lamp life and thereby cut maintenance costs by 33 percent. Guest comfort is increased through the reliability of LED night-light. The LED nightlight uses less than 1 watt of power yet provides enough light to enable individuals to navigate within a room while their night vision is preserved. A safety-mode feature automatically runs the fixture's LED nightlight on backup battery during power outages.
