Class Announcement

Interior design and architecture are shaped by how designers introduce and control the luminous characteristics of light sources in a space. How a space looks and functions is heavily influenced by the characteristics of the luminous environment.

One of the most significant elements that designers have on their palette is the wide array of light sources, fixtures, and lighting control systems. Lighting fixtures and luminaires are elements that a designer can select and specify to enhance and illuminate an interior to create a specific aesthetic or to reinforce a level of functionality.

Students will develop a basic understanding of how light sources and luminous elements can be controlled and manipulated through the design process to create special effects and different light distribution characteristics. The class will explore wall wash fixtures, pendants and exterior wall sconces.

Students will conduct a series of experiments and explorations on how to control light sources to create both functional and aesthetically pleasing luminous elements. Laboratory exercises will consist of exploration with new light sources and optical elements including LED sources. The class curriculum will include a lighting design project and competition with judges from the architectural and interior design community and lighting industry.
