Integrated Office Lighting System (IOLS) |
The Integrated Office Lighting System (IOLS) is a total systems approach to reducing the billions of kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed annually by office lighting. Title 24 (2008) energy code is expected to reduce the maximum allowable power density to as low as 0.85 W/ft2. The majority of the lighting is provided by overhead troffers or pendents. Appropriately achieving a significant energy savings requires the overhead lighting load to be reduced without allowing user comfort and visual acuity to suffer. This is made possible by incorporating high quality, efficient task lighting. One possible component of the IOLS approach is the Personal Lighting System (PLS), an LED task light that was developed jointly by Finelite, Inc. and California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC).

RESULTS:
- Cost effective for many retrofit, remodeling, and new construction applications
- Best retrofit paybacks result when T12's are replaced with T8, total lamp quantity is reduced, and users employ task lighting frequently
- Able to achieve lighting power density below the new Title 24 2008 requirements
- Improved lighting quality, easy to install, creates a personal workspace in open office areas
STATUS: The University of California/California State University (UC/CSU) and Investor-Owned Utility (IOU) Partnership Program has identified incentives for this technology that range from $60 to $80 per fixture. The task fixtures are currently available from Finelite, Inc. and include multiple options such as wattage and mounting type. There are multiple fixture types in the series.
