Bi-level Smart LED Bollard

Most bollard style luminaires are used to light common areas, pathways, and sidewalks. They usually employ either metal halide, high pressure sodium, or compact fluorescent lamps. Such systems are typically operated all night at full output, regardless of occupancy.

The California Energy Commission's PIER Program funded the development of an innovative luminaire for pathway applications that directly addresses both system efficiency and occupancy patterns. Researchers at California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC), in close partnership with Gardco Lighting (Philips Group Brand), developed the Bi-level Smart LED Bollard that utilizes high quality LEDs and microwave occupancy sensors to both efficiently light the pathway and further reduce energy consumption during unoccupied periods. The high-low mode functionality not only saves energy, but it also alerts security personnel and pedestrians to the presence of other occupants, thus increasing safety.

Performance results/energy savings:
92% savings compared to 100W HID
~ 4,300 kWh savings per year

Date of Install: Spring 2008

Timeframe of testing/evaluation: Spring 2008

Partners:
Gardco Lighting (Philips Group Brand)

Sponsors: California Energy Commission

RESULTS:
  • Most cost effective for new construction applications and replacing HID product alternatives
  • Optical efficiency improvements reduce energy consumption and long life LEDs significantly reduce maintenance costs
  • May be used in many commercial and institutional applications such as parks, sidewalks, pathways, parking lots, and building entryways
STATUS:

The University of California/California State University (UC/CSU) and Investor-Owned Utility (IOU) Partnership Program has identified an incentive for this product that is approximately $40-$130.

The Bi-level Smart LED Bollard is currently available from Gardco Lighting and is designated the BRM 830 Series. This series includes dome or bevel tops, various luminaire colors, multiple LED colors, and can be installed using either cast aluminum or concrete bases.
