Bi-level Smart Parking Garage Fixture

Many parking garage structures in commercial and institutional facilities are currently illuminated with High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Metal Halide (MH) ceiling mounted fixtures. The nature for this type of lighting application requires illumination throughout the entire day. However, occupancy patterns are ignored and thus entire garages, or areas of garages, are often lit and vacant for long periods throughout the day/night.

In order to develop a solution that addresses this savings opportunity, the California Energy Commission's PIER Program funded the development and demonstration of a garage fixture that integrates state of the art LED sources and occupancy-based dimming controls. The high optical efficiency and light quality delivered by the LED sources requires less energy demand than typical HID sources. The bi-level controls provide additional energy savings that is directly proportional to automatic and pedestrian traffic patterns.

OBJECTIVE:

To develop an LED garage fixture to reduce energy consumption, maintenance cost, as well as increasing safety by alerting occupants to other traffic

APPLICATION:
  • Commercial
  • Institutional
DESCRIPTION / FEATURES:
  • Energy savings:
By employing LED light sources, up to 40% savings compared to typical HID
By employing Bi-level controls, up to 30% additional savings compared to typical HID
  • High performance LEDs reduce demand and maintenace
  • Bi-level controls further increase safety and savings

Performance results/energy savings:
~70% savings compared to 150W High Pressure Sodium
~30,000 kWh savings per year

Date of Install: Winter 2008

Timeframe of testing/evaluation:Spring 2008

Partners: California State University, Beta LED

Sponsors: California Energy Commission

RESULTS:
  • Most cost-effective in new construction and major renovation applications
  • Optical efficiency improvements reduce energy consumption and long-life LEDs significantly reduce maintenance costs
  • Light level activity can increase safety by alerting occupants to other traffic
STATUS:

The Bi-level Smart LED Parking Garage Fixture is currently available from Beta LED and can be ordered in a variety of configurations, light outputs, and mounting types.
