The Lighting Design studio course uses an iterative method and involves a laboratory exploration with the goal of prototyping a fully working LED based fixture design. Students explore fundamental concepts in optics, materials, photometrics and building science and aesthetically pleasing lighting systems. Students are given a broad array of modular LED sources and electrical connections which could then be configured together in a specific student design for each luminaire. Students are encouraged to explore multiple solutions and then evaluated based on objective indicators, aesthetic considerations, manufacturability and cost. Annual LED Luminaire Design Competition Press ReleaseStudents enrolled in the DES 136B Winter Quarter 2009 course will design, develop, and prototype a fully working LED-based lighting fixture for the Annual LED Luminaire Design Competition. Students will use a development kit of products provided by Arrow Electronics, Magtech Industries, OPTEK Technology, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, and Tyco Electronics. Designs will be evaluated on the creative use of LED technology, and overall functionality and design, by a panel of judges including CLTC and supplier representatives. Winning designs will be displayed at LIGHTFAIR International 2009 in the Arrow Electronics booth (Booth #2575) in New York City. |
