2009 Campus Lighting Retrofit Forum

Lighting retrofits provide an excellent opportunity for savings with immediate reductions in energy use while improving the visual environment for the occupants of the space. With the growing availability of solid-state lighting technologies, lighting controls, daylighting systems, and improvements on traditional sources, the search for lighting solutions for campus applications is growing more promising and complex.

To examine the options, the 2009 CLTC Campus Lighting Retrofit Forum was held on July 1 at UC Davis and again on July 13 at UC Irvine. The Forum provided a technology neutral platform for campus leadership, facilities managers, sustainability experts, and energy managers to forge connections and exchange information on current campus lighting practices. Panels of experts gave presentations and led discussions on general campus lighting practices, financing, and project case studies. Members of the CLTC manufacturer affiliate program showcased various technologies through table-top exhibits. CLTC’s collaboration with different sectors of the lighting industry positions the Center as a central hub to create vital connections, and this was evident in conversations that took place during the Forum.

Approximately 300 participants attended the event at the two locations, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. For campus representatives who were not able to travel to the event or for reference, the presentations, agenda and exhibitor information have been posted in the online event archive.

The Forum was funded in part by the Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program fund within the California Energy Commission. The PIER State Partnership for Energy Efficiency Demonstrations is bringing newly developed building technologies and deployment approaches into effective use throughout a wide range of California venues, including California university and college campuses and Department of General Services properties. The demonstration program highlights technologies developed under PIER's collaborative process that leverages public research and development funds to help manufacturers bring innovative, energy-efficient products into the commercial marketplace.

The PIER demonstrations model provides a way for end-users like campuses to "try before they buy" and evaluate products based on performance. The majority of the case studies that were highlighted at the Forum stemmed from demonstrations managed through this program. The forum provided an opportunity to develop new demonstrations partnerships. To participate in the program, contact Cori Jackson, Development Engineer, to arrange a project review.

The concerns brought up at this year’s Forum represent a microcosm in the larger scope of global lighting concerns. Growing trends towards energy-efficient lighting focus on not just the financial benefits, but on the idea of long-term viability and lessening the impacts to the global environment. In order to further address these issues, CLTC is organizing a 2010 CLTC International Symposium for Lighting Retrofits. More information will be announced about this event as it is planned.
