UC Davis design students develop LED lighting fixtures in class sponsored by industry manufacturers

"Designing with Light" (Design 198) is a studio design course in the environmental design dept at UC Davis, taught by Professor Michael Siminovitch, at the California Lighting Technology Center. The studio course is designed as an exploration in light where students have the opportunity to explore theoretical concepts in lighting technology and design building on material presented in earlier lighting lecture courses. The goal of this exploration is to design, develop and prototype a fully working LED (light emitting Diode) based lighting fixture to illuminate a specific task.

The studio design class was sponsored by Permlight who provided LED components, materials and also participated in design reviews and student presentations. This high level of support and sponsorship is an important element in bringing real world experience into the class and helps to build understanding of the design commercialization process. Additionally this cooperation brings next generation technology into the classroom and is an invaluable experience to the students, the lighting designers, architects and engineers of tomorrow.
