This project leverages the strong market knowledge, connections, and downlight platform of the manufacturers involved in the development of unique new designs while utilizing the strengths of LED technology (i.e., dimmability, optical control, small size, lower power options, and long lamp life.) CLTC will continue to work towards commercialization with the commercial partners. Demonstrations are planned for summer 2008.
LEDs have improved rapidly in both luminous efficacy and color quality. Their small form factor make them a good candidate for downlight applications, but the high brightness LED products can cause visual discomfort. Additionally, the constricted thermal environment in downlights can be extremely challenging for LEDs.

Advanced LED Downlights in the demonstration kitchen at CLTC |
OBJECTIVE:
To develop a downlighting system based on indirect optical designs that will reduce direct LED glare, decrease installation time, and improve thermal management
APPLICATIONS:
- Residential: Kitchens, hallways
- Commercial: Corridors, conference rooms, break rooms
- Hospitality: Restaurants, corridors, lobbies
DESCRIPTION / FEATURES:
- Efficient centralized power supply: A single central power supply is utilized for cost savings and energy efficiency
- Simplified wiring: Low voltage (class 2) wiring between the centralized power supply and the downlights allows for easier, and less expensive wiring installations
- Reduced glare: The Indirect Optic increases visual comfort and produces a downlight with uniform brightness
- Better thermal management: The Indirect Optic places LED sources in a location where they can be more easily thermally managed, which improves LED output and life
- Expandability: The central power supply architecture allows for easy expandability for additional downlights as well as other LED fixtures such as under cabinet fixtures
