Don Aumann Memorial Lecture in Lighting Efficiency
CLTC's inaugural Don Aumann Memorial Lecture in Lighting Efficiency was held Jan. 25 at the UC Davis Conference Center. Lorne Whitehead, PhD, professor of applied physics at the University of British Columbia, spoke to a full room on the promise of harnessing daylight to illuminate buildings. Whitehead helped develop the Core Sunlighting System, an exterior fixture with a combination of moveable and fixed mirrors and a horizontal light pipe that redirects and distributes direct sunlight into the cores of buildings. The first California installation of this system is on the UC Davis campus, and another installation is planned soon.
The intent of the biannual lecture is to honor the memory of Don Aumann, the CLTC program director who died suddenly in 2007. The lecture program is sponsored in part by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and the Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) program of the California Energy Commission.
