Light and Health: Design Strategies and Technologies

Illuminating Engineering Society, San Francisco
Presented by Konstantinos Papamichael

CLTC Co-director Konstantinos Papamichael discusses how new lighting strategies and technologies can impact human health and circadian function, both positively and negatively.

Honda Smart Home US

The Honda Smart Home US is a model zero net energy (ZNE) home located in the UC Davis West Village. Honda collaborated with UC Davis, CLTC and WCEC to build this forward-thinking example of residential sustainability. The home includes daylighting, advanced lighting controls, and high-efficacy, circadian-friendly LED lighting.

LED Retrofit Options for Linear Fluorescent Luminaires

Fluorescent lamps currently constitute 80 percent of lamps installed in the U.S. commercial sector, according to the Department of Energy's latest Lighting Market Characterization report. LED lighting products are receiving a great deal of attention for their potential to replace fluorescent lighting, reduce energy use and improve lighting quality in a variety of indoor commercial applications, including offices, classrooms and retail stores.

CALCTP AT Technician Training May 2014

California’s new Title 24 standards will require that certain lighting control devices be certified as properly installed and operational before occupancy permits are issued. The new standards also require that this verification process be performed by a trained and certified lighting controls acceptance test technician.

What's New in the Title 24 2013 Code?

Changes to the lighting requirements under Title 24, Part 6 took effect July 1, 2014. This brief guide offers an overview of important requirements and major updates to these lighting codes and standards.

LD+A Research Matters: LED Retrofit Options for Linear Fluorescent Lighting

LD+A — Tubular fluorescent lamps comprise 80 percent of the lamp inventory in the commercial sector, or about 1.7 billion lamps, according to a U.S. Department of Energy report. As the lighting industry moves rapidly toward solid-state lighting, three main LED retrofit strategies have emerged for this very large segment of the market: tubular LED lamps, LED retrofit kits and dedicated LED luminaires.

UC Davis Institutional-Level Adaptive Controls for Exterior Lighting

The Institutional-level Adaptive Controls for Exterior Lighting system incorporates exterior light points — pathways, building perimeters, parking lots, and roadways — into one smart, wireless system.

Originally launched as a pilot study, this system has since been installed for over 1,600 luminaires at the University of California, Davis.

Seoul Semiconductor and LEDLab Team Up with CLTC, UC Davis for 10th Annual Luminaire Design Competition

This year, 2014, marks the 10th Annual Luminaire Design Competition for students enrolled in Designing with Light (DES 136B) at the University of California, Davis. The competition gives students the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art lighting technologies and to share their designs with professionals in the lighting industry. Seoul Semiconductor and LEDLab supported the 2014 competition and provided each student with an Acrich2 LED module for use in their energy-efficient outdoor luminaire prototypes.
