This work will discuss the CALCTP program, its energy savings potential, the challenges in educating an established trade group in new technology, programs stemming from the initial CALCTP effort, and the immediate need for ongoing support to ensure this model program continues to succeed in the coming years. A growing number of LED products are entering the market, adding to the many choices consumers already face. By 2025, 60 percent of residential lighting across the U.S. will likely be LED-based. While nearly all LED lighting choices offer energy savings, not all LED products are created equal, and LEDs may not always be the best type of lamp to use. Professor Michael Siminovitch, director of the California Lighting Technology Center at UC Davis, urges people to consider five things when looking for the right light.
Lighting accounts for about a quarter of California’s electricity use, and installing energy-efficient lighting can lead to significant energy, maintenance, carbon, and economic savings, according to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). In September 2010, the CPUC adopted a plan to achieve a 60–80% reduction in statewide electrical lighting consumption by 2020.

The California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program (CALCTP) provides training and certification to electricians, contractors, acceptance test technicians, building operators and managers. The program is increasing the use of energy-saving lighting controls in commercial buildings and ensuring they are properly installed and commissioned for maximum effectiveness.
