Energy-Efficient Lighting System Evaluations for Commercial Applications

The potential to reduce energy consumption in existing and commercial buildings is enormous. On average, 30% of the energy used in commercial buildings is wasted, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Lighting has a large potential for energy savings for any U.S. building end use, with a significant fraction of that potential coming from lighting controls.

Energy-Efficient Lighting Systems Evaluations for Commercial Applications

CLTC, in partnership with Southern California Edison, recently kicked off a new project portfolio to assess controls, lighting, and daylighting technologies and their potential for commercial applications. The new projects will have elements of market assessment, EM&V, and selected demonstrations.

CLTC is now the lead organization processing new LED product report reviews for the upstream Residential Lighting Incentive Programs conducted by PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E. CLTC staff work with the utility Program Managers to identify product that will be considered for review. If manufacturers have products that are likely to meet the CEC Specification, the manufacturer should contact the utility Program Manager to be considered for participation. Program Managers will determine which products CLTC will review, based on their program needs.

Product Review for Compliance with the California Quality LED Lamp Specification

The California Energy Commission has adopted a voluntary lighting quality specification for LED replacement lamps. The California Quality LED Lamp Specification requires LED lamps to meet certain performance criteria. The requirement to use the standard to guide Residential Lighting Incentive Program currently applies to the investor owned utilities, but several municipal utilities are considering the adoption of the standard.

MR-16 LED Replacement Lamps: Electrical Compatibility and Performance

As light emitting diode (LED) MR16 lamps become more prevalent in the commercial market, both residential and commercial end‐users are considering these lamps as replacements for currently installed halogen incandescent MR16 sources. While the energy savings associated with LED lamp replacements is evident, the compatibility of LED MR16 lamps with existing electrical hardware is not. In one‐to‐one lamp retrofits, MR16 LED lamps often demonstrate negative performance characteristics such as visible flicker and audible humming.

Performance Testing Report: Omni-directional LED Replacement Lamps

A number of lighting manufacturers now produce LED replacement lamps for traditional 60W incandescent lamps, and stakeholders at the state and national levels face decisions regarding quality standards for this product category. To assist these stakeholders and assess the current state of this segment of the lighting market, CLTC performed photometric and electrical tests on samples of 26 commercially available A19 and A21 omnidirectional LED replacement products.

LED Lamp Project Lights the Way to Flicker-Free Replacement

Jade Sky Technologies (“JST”) collaborated with UC Davis's California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) on a project designed to further the development of replacement lamps that meet the Voluntary California Quality LED Lamp Specification. Lab testing and characterization at CLTC showed that lamps incorporating JST's driver architecture met, or exceeded, the California Quality specification, using cost-effective and easily accessible components.

California Quality Standard and the LED Performance Database

The Voluntary California Quality LED Lamp Specification requires that LED lamps meet certain product performance criteria. This “California Quality” specification was developed by the California Energy Commission in collaboration with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to accelerate consumer adoption of LED lamps. Many California utilities are using the California Quality Specification to determine which lamps they will include in their rebate and incentive programs.
