The California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) held its 10th Annual Luminaire Design Competition on March 13, 2014. Each year since CLTC’s founding, Professor Michael Siminovitch has provided the UC Davis undergraduate students in his Designing with Light class (DES136B) with a design challenge that spans the full 10 weeks of the course. Lighting courses at UC Davis are taught through the Department of Design, under the College of Letters and Science’s Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies.
UC Davis Professor Konstantinos Papamichael recently received a 2013 Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Presidential Award. IES President Chip Israel presented the award to Dr. Papamichael on October 28, during this year’s IES Annual Conference in Huntington Beach, CA.
Winner of the top award for Research, Publications, Software, and Measuring Devices at Lightfair International 2014, the IES's RP-5-13: Recommended Practice for Daylighting Buildings includes the most up-to-date technological solutions and data for addressing the challenges of daylighting while maximizing its benefits.
California's 2008 and 2013 Title 24 standards require some high-efficacy lighting in a limited number of residential space types, such as kitchens and bathrooms. (Refer to the project page for more on code requirements for high-efficacy luminaire classification.) Future standards requiring all high-efficacy lighting in residential buildings could yield large-scale energy savings—if cost-effective technologies will satisfy consumers.

CLTC and UC Davis have partnered with affiliate American Honda Motor Co., Inc. on the Honda Smart Home US project. Groundbreaking took place April 23, 2013 at UC Davis West Village. Project leaders from UC Davis and Honda celebrated the project's completion at an open house event on March 25, 2014. The zero net energy (ZNE) home is a model of residential sustainability, demonstrating best-practice solutions for lighting in new construction projects.
The UC Davis Smart Lighting Initiative was established in 2010 to improve the quality and efficiency of both indoor and outdoor lighting on campus. The initiative's primary goal is to reduce UC Davis's electricity use for lighting by 60 percent, based on 2007 levels of energy use. The effort was inspired by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and its call to reduce statewide electricity consumption for lighting by 60 percent or more by 2020.
