Evaluating Opportunities in Advanced Daylighting Retrofits

Interior lighting remains a large component of electricity use in non-residential buildings. In California, electric lighting has both a direct effect on peak load, and an indirect effect by increasing cooling requirements during summer peak hours. Effective daylighting combined with electric lighting dimming controls can directly offset electric lighting energy by reducing lighting levels when necessary to reduce the load on the cooling system.

CLTC is partnering with Liberty to create a zero net energy community in West Sacramento along the Sacramento River. The Liberty Lighting Guide provides design and technical specifications, application of directives, as well as Title 24 code compliance requirements for residential, outdoor, private community clubhouses, K – 8 schools, private clubhouses, neighborhood commercial spaces, parks, greenbelts, trails, sports, and recreation centers.

With new funding awarded from the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the California Lighting Technology Center, UC Davis will continue to lead an initiative focused on developing lighting strategies designed for use in sustainable building projects. The funding, awarded under the winning proposal titled “Establishing Lighting Best Practices and Educational Programs to Achieve Deep Energy Savings,” will support workshops intended to build a collaborative of researchers committed to the development of sharable lighting best practices that will achieve deep energy savings through retrof

UC Davis Professor Michael Siminovitch Selected for Global Climate Leadership Council

Michael Siminovitch, UC Davis professor of design and director of UC Davis’s California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC), has been selected by UC President Janet Napolitano to serve on the newly formed University of California Global Climate Leadership Council, which includes UC officials, students and outside experts. President Napolitano formed the council to guide UC efforts aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2025.

Adaptive Circadian Lighting Demonstration: Honda Smart Home US

CLTC and UC Davis have partnered with affiliate American Honda Motor Co., Inc. on the Honda Smart Home US project. Groundbreaking took place April 23, 2013 at UC Davis West Village. Project leaders from UC Davis and Honda celebrated the project's completion at an open house event on March 25, 2014. The zero net energy (ZNE) home is a model of residential sustainability, demonstrating best-practice solutions for lighting in new construction projects.
