This class is for professionals who design, specify or inspect lighting installations in new and remodeled homes. Attendees will learn the latest lighting requirements for new installations and retrofits in residential spaces, under 2013 Title 24, Part 6. PG&E lighting rebates and emerging technologies, such as LED luminaires, will also be covered.

CLTC’s updated Residential Lighting Guide is designed to help builders and lighting industry professionals navigate the residential lighting portion of California’s newest Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Part 6). The new standards take effect July 1, 2014 and include updated requirements for high-efficacy lighting, lighting controls, and LED quality.

The class is intended for professionals who design, specify, or inspect lighting installations in new and remodeled homes. It is offered at no cost to California businesses and residents through Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Energy Education Classes. It is worth 5.5 AIA credits.

LED Vanity Luminaire

LED Vanity Luminaire

Effective July 1, 2014, California’s new Title 24, Part 6 standards require that bathrooms in residential homes have at least one high-efficacy luminaire installed in them. (The remaining installed luminaires may be low efficacy and controlled by a vacancy sensor.)

In an effort to accelerate market advancement in this product category, CLTC is collaborating with Pacific Gas and Electric Company and LED manufacturer Seoul Semiconductor to develop a high-efficacy, “best-in-class” LED vanity luminaire for residential bathrooms.

Honda Smart Home US

The Honda Smart Home US is a model zero net energy (ZNE) home located in the UC Davis West Village. Honda collaborated with UC Davis, CLTC and WCEC to build this forward-thinking example of residential sustainability. The home includes daylighting, advanced lighting controls, and high-efficacy, circadian-friendly LED lighting.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. hosted an open house event to showcase the Honda Smart Home US on Tuesday, March 25 at UC Davis West Village. UC Davis, CLTC and the WCEC collaborated with Honda to design and build the model zero net energy (ZNE) home. It uses a photovoltaic (PV) system and ultra-efficient lighting and HVAC technologies to produce more power than household operations consume.

Relighting American Homes with LEDs

This working paper, co-written by CLTC Directors Michael Siminovitch and Konstantinos Papamichael, urges manufacturers, regulators and utilities that offer product incentives to consider quality and consumer satisfaction first when it comes to LED products. Their arguments in favor of lighting quality, over efficiency, were also presented in "Trading Up," an article published in the August 2011 issue of LD+A.
