The California Lighting Technology Center is honored to welcome Professor Jia-Ming Day from Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) as a visiting scholar. His residency will take place from August 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, at the invitation of CLTC's co-director Jae Yong Suk.

Professor Day, currently the head of the Department of New Media Art at TNUA, is renowned for his innovative contributions to the field of new media and light art. In 2016, he launched the KuanDu Light Art Festival (KDLAF) at TNUA to address the lack of artistic elements in traditional lantern festival events in Taiwan. This festival has since become a highlight of the university's art calendar, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year to both on-campus and off-campus venues, including the Zhonggang River Pier.

Professor Day’s graduate program journey began at San Jose State University and culminated with an MFA in Computer Graphics from Pratt Institute in New York. His work aims to challenge and expand the conventional definitions of animation, utilizing a blend of virtual and physical media. His creative practice involves innovative uses of inflatable materials, cash machines, 3D printing, turntables, and AR/VR technologies. His animation projects have been showcased at prestigious international conferences such as ARS ELECTRONICA, SIGGRAPH, HCI International, and AHFE. More about his work can be found at Jia-Ming Day's website.

During his time at UC Davis, Professor Day will focus on research and collaboration in light art installation and exhibition. “Professor Day’s innovative approach to new media art and his experience in organizing large-scale light art festivals will significantly enrich our research efforts,” said Professor Jae Yong Suk, co-director of CLTC. “His unique perspective will contribute greatly to our exploration of artistic and technological intersections in lighting.”

Professor Day’s visit highlights UC Davis’s commitment to fostering global collaborations and advancing research in both art and science.
