Renewable Energy & Advanced Lighting Systems for Grid-Connected Exterior Applications

In many communities, exterior lighting operates from early evening through early morning—times when renewable energy generation is minimal. Consequently, most exterior lighting relies on carbon-dense fossil fuels, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, poor air quality, water pollution, and land degradation. Additionally, outdated and low-quality exterior lighting, characterized by poor color, inappropriate light distribution, and inadequate light levels, has been linked to increased crime rates and reduced physical activity.

In California cities, antiquated electrical infrastructure and aging fixtures exacerbate these issues, resulting in maintenance challenges and inoperable luminaires. When combined with increasingly common Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), the situation disproportionately impacts disadvantaged and low-income communities, leaving them with unsafe and substandard lighting.

To combat these challenges, the California Energy Commission has funded CLTC to develop and demonstrate Renewable Energy and Advanced Lighting (REAL) systems. These innovative systems will include advanced features currently absent in today's commercial exterior lighting:

  • Hybrid Power: Utilizes both solar and grid-tied energy sources.
  • Battery Energy Storage (BES): Ensures reliable night-time power.
  • Best-in-Class Energy Efficiency: Maximizes energy savings.
  • Circadian-Appropriate Lighting Spectrum: Promotes health and well-being.

Community-Focused Design

This project redefines lighting design practices by actively engaging residents and business owners in low-income and disadvantaged communities through local studies and technology demonstrations. This inclusive, community-focused approach ensures that the true potential of energy-efficient, demand-flexible exterior lighting can be realized, leading to improved safety and health.

CLTC is collaborating with industry partners and committed demonstration communities to ensure that REAL systems meet technical and cost-effective needs. Key benefits include:
