As buildings embrace advanced control technologies, cybersecurity has become a top priority—especially for networked lighting systems, now woven into complex IT and operational technology networks. Traditionally, electricians have focused on hands-on electrical work, but today’s connected systems demand an expanded skill set to guard against cyber threats that can compromise entire buildings.
CLTC, backed by a U.S. Department of Labor workforce development grant, launched the Western Electrical Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Training (WECAT) Program to help address this issue. WECAT prepares apprentice electricians in California and Nevada to secure networked lighting and building systems against these digital risks, blending traditional expertise with modern cybersecurity know-how.
