CLTC Releases Nonresidential Lighting and Electrical Power Distribution Guide

The California Lighting Technology Center's Nonresidential Lighting and Electrical Power Distribution Guide for the 2016 Building Energy Efficiency Standards is now available! The guide assists builders and lighting industry professionals in navigating the nonresidential lighting and electrical power distribution portions of California’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Part 6). The updated Energy Standards took effect on January 1, 2017.  

LEDVANCE Sponsors UC Davis LED Design Competition

LEDVANCE, maker of SYLVANIA advanced LED lamps as well as a wide range of traditional light sources, standardized luminaires and connected lighting products, is sponsoring this years LED design competition at UC Davis Department of Design.  The annual lighting design competition focuses on the development of LED luminaire design as a creative industrial design experience for undergraduates at UC Davis.  This undergraduate design class introduces learning experiences associated with product design, prototyping and innovation in the development of new LED luminaire design.

CLTC Kicks Off Life Testing for Commercial LED Products

Recently, CLTC energized a round of life testing focused on evaluating commercially available medium screw base and linear LED replacement lamp solutions on behalf of the California Energy Commission! 

This work serves to provide our industry with independent lamp testing and validation in order to ensure high-quality LED lamps are identified, promoted and incentivized in the California market.  Additionally, CLTC will leverage the life testing outcomes to develop innovative design specifications and prototypes for high-quality lighting products.

CLTC Releases Updated Residential Lighting Guide

Our Residential Lighting Guide updated for the 2016 Building Energy Efficiency Standards is now available! The guide assists builders and lighting industry professionals in navigating the residential lighting portion of California’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Part 6). The updated Energy Standards take effect on January 1, 2017.

CLTC Collaborates with Liberty to Advance Lighting Standards for ZNE Communities

Today, existing municipal lighting standards in use by many cities are outdated and lack a comprehensive approach that fully supports zero net energy (ZNE) policy goals, high color rendering and circadian-friendly design. Working with the Liberty Development located in the City of West Sacramento, CLTC is poised to reevaluate and develop forward-thinking municipal standards in support of local and broad ZNE community development goals.

City of Davis Announces Final Phase of Outdoor Lighting Upgrade

Last week, the City of Davis announced it has entered into the final phase of its city-wide, outdoor lighting system upgrade!  New luminaires are compliant with the outdoor LED lighting guidelines recently published by the American Medical Association and they feature onboard occupancy sensing technology, which automatically controls light levels based on the presence of pedestrians or vehicles in the area.  More light is provided when someo

UC Davis Hosts Office of Naval Research's NEPTUNE Program Meetings

UC Davis hosted the Office of Naval Research this week to convene the Naval Enterprise Partnership Teaming with Universities for National Excellence (NEPTUNE) initiative.  The focus of this effort is on Driving Research and Leadership in Buildings and Transportation Efficiency with a goal to improve energy conservation, generate renewable energy and implement energy-efficient technologies.  NEPTUNE also provides the opportunity for active-duty military, military students and veterans to participate in university-level research.

Researchers Awarded IES Taylor Technical Talent Award for Color Quality Publication

Professors from the University of California - Davis, University of British Columbia and the National Research Council, Canada have been awarded the 2016 Taylor Technical Talent award for research.  The research published in Leukos, the journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society, focuses on the issue of color rendering from both a policy and technical perspective. This research provided input to California’s 2016 Building Energy Efficiency Standards and Appliance Efficiency Regulations.

Cree Debuts New Lighting System at CLTC

CLTC recently installed the new general illumination product from Cree in the classroom! The Cree CR22 2' x 2' luminaires are paired with the Cree SmartCast Technology to provide a self-commissioning, field-adjustable CCT, high-color rendition, dimmable lighting experience.

CLTC’s Advanced Daylight Lab Receives a Facelift

As part of current research sponsored by Southern California Edison, CLTC is updating its Advanced Daylighting Lab to include dynamic fenestration and integration of electric lighting and HVAC systems.  Activities are being conducted in collaboration with ready-to-integrate manufacturing partners so that new systems can more quickly and effectively transition to the commercial market.

CLTC Partners with California Community Colleges to Advance Lighting Systems Education and Training

Leaders from the California Community Colleges met this week at CLTC to discuss advanced lighting curriculum and training materials for contractors and building professionals of the future. CLTC Director Michael Siminovitch hosted the team and urged collaboration with industry partners on training students with new, energy efficient technologies in their classrooms. 

CLTC Constructs Instrumentation for Consumer Preference Study

On behalf of the California Energy Commission, CLTC researchers are working to understand consumer preference of select lighting performance metrics.  The residential vanity is identified as a critical application where consumer preference is a key factor in successfully migrating concepts from the lab to the market place resulting in sustained energy savings. 

As part of this consumer preference study, CLTC will be sending out a digital survey to gather your consumer preference.
