CLTC Hosted University of California Global Climate Leadership Council Meeting

CLTC hosted the University of California Global Climate Leadership Council meeting on February 25.

UC President Janet Napolitano formed the council to advise UC campuses on achieving the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2025 while providing guidance for furthering other longstanding sustainability goals. The council will offer direction on integrating the carbon neutrality initiative into UC’s teaching, research and public service mission.

2013 Title 24, Part 6 Lighting for Office Applications Guide

The California Lighting Technology Center’s Lighting for Office Applications Guide is designed to familiarize builders and lighting industry professionals with the office nonresidential portion of California’s 2013 Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Part 6).

The guide includes the compliance process and requirements, current lighting technologies, and recommendations for implementing the standards in new construction or renovation projects. It serves as a resource for those involved in constructing, maintaining, or retrofitting California's office buildings.

The California Lighting Technology Center’s Retail Lighting Guide is designed to educate builders, lighting designers, contractors and others about the retail nonresidential lighting portion of California’s 2013 Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Part 6).

CLTC Helped To Successfully Commercialize Next-Generation Sensor

The commercialization of Echelon's Lumewave MWX-LVE long-range outdoor microwave sensor illustrates CLTC's success in supporting advanced sensors for adaptive outdoor applications.

CLTC demonstrated and supported the next-generation sensor, which detects movement and can distinguish between slow and fast moving objects such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorized vehicles. The sensor reacts to the size of objects from longer distances, automatically raising the light levels to high output when the areas are occupied and lowering them when areas are vacant.

Lighting Products and Best Practices Provided in High-Efficacy Residential Lighting Guide

CLTC developed the High-Efficacy Residential Lighting guide to provide information about lighting products and key lighting principles and best practice recommendations. The guide is designed to help builders and lighting industry professionals working on zero-net energy (ZNE) and sustainable residential projects.

Lighting designs consisting of high-efficacy luminaires and lamps currently exceed California's energy code requirements. Such designs are increasingly attractive to home buyers as demand grows for energy-efficient smart homes and ZNE residences.

2013 Title 24, Part 6 Outdoor Lighting Guide

The California Lighting Technology Center’s 2013 Outdoor Lighting Guide for Title 24, Part 6 compliance is designed to help builders, lighting industry professionals, and others navigate the nonresidential outdoor lighting portion of California’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards. The new standards, which took effect July 1, 2014, include updated requirements for retrofit standards, lighting controls, and uplight and glare limits.

CLTC Providing Key Guidance on Draft Title 24 Residential Standards

CLTC is providing key guidance and coordination in developing the next generation of Title 24, Part 6 standards for residential applications. The proposed lighting measures in the draft 2016 Building Energy Efficiency Standards will increase the adoption of high efficacy and high quality solid-state lighting products in new homes being built. 

CLTC Grew Partnerships with APEC

CLTC strengthened its partnership with King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) as part of efforts to advance lighting efficiency at the international level.

This summer, CLTC Director Michael Siminovitch led a graduate-level seminar on LED luminaire design at KMUTT in Bangkok, Thailand. In the fall, CLTC and UC Davis welcomed KMUTT leaders to campus. During the visit, the universities signed a memo of understanding supporting collaboration between their lighting research centers.

UC Davis, Thai University Sign MOU

On September 16 CLTC and UC Davis welcomed President Sakarindr Bhumiratana and five other academic leaders from King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Thailand, for a meeting with UC Davis Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph Hexter and other senior UC Davis representatives. During the visit, the two universities signed a memo of understanding supporting collaboration between their respective lighting research centers, both of which are dedicated to improving the sustainability and energy efficiency of lighting.

UC Davis and CLTC Partner with Thai University to Improve Lighting Efficiency

UC Davis Professor Michael Siminovitch will return to King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi in Thailand for a third time, August 16–September 13. This year Professor Siminovitch has been awarded a Distinguished Visiting Professorship at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), which will include teaching a graduate class in luminaire design.
